Practise Your 'Spotting' & The Perfect Ballet Bun

Hello everyone

I do hope that you are all keeping well and active!

Let's hope that within the next few days we all hear some good news, as to when and how we start our journey back to normality.

In the meantime, try having a go at learning/practising how to do a ballet bun.  A ballet bun is the traditional hairstyle worn by ballerinas.  The main purposes are to prevent hair from getting in the way of the dancer and to provide a uniform look for all.  Below is a really good link for you to follow and it is exactly the way I do my bun!

What is ‘Spotting’?
Spotting is when a dancer focuses on a spot for as long as they can and then at the last moment, whips their head around to quickly relocate the spot.  This helps prevent the dancer from getting dizzy whilst performing multiple turns.

 How to practise spotting:

  1. Stand facing a mirror, with your hands on hips, elbows pointing straight out;
  2. Relax your shoulders and lengthen your neck as if someone was tugging the tops of your ears toward the ceiling;
  3. Start to slowly rotate your body in either direction with small steps of the feet;
  4. Keep your eyes on yourself (or your focal point) as you turn;
  5. When your head can no longer turn enough to continue focusing on your spot; immediately whip your head around toward your other shoulder to find the spot again;
  6. Continue rotating the body until it catches up with your head.

A few spotting tips;

  1. Be sure to keep your eyes, chin and shoulders level as you turn;
  2. Keep your eyes on the spot as long as possible;
  3. Stay sharp - your spotting should never be sluggish;
  4. On every turn, try to refocus your eyes as you find your spot again; and, lastly
  5. Try to remain standing!!

Take care
